There are a large number of websites offering house shares. Mostly they all work in a similar way. You can choose if you have a room to spare that you want to advertise, or if you are looking for a room to rent.

The standard format is that you register as a user of the site, and then you search for the type of place you are looking for. Almost all of the sites will allow you to search by area, postcode and budget. There are some sites however – generally the bigger, better ones that will let you define your search even more. Giving you a choice of smoking or non-smoking house, mixed or single sex house, pets or no-pet houses, age ranges and many others.

The bigger sites can have hundreds or thousands of places available so being able to define the search in such a way can save you a lot of time.
